Mongolia Trade Surplus Largest In Over a Year

In September 2025, Mongolia experienced a significant increase in its trade surplus, reaching USD 487.2 million, compared to USD 50.7 million in September of the previous year. This represents the highest trade surplus since June 2024. During this period, exports increased by 10.1% to USD 1,550.5 million, while imports saw a 6.6% rise to USD 1,063.3 million.

However, for the January to September period, the trade surplus decreased to USD 2,174.8 million, down from USD 3,174.8 million in the corresponding timeframe the previous year. Exports fell by 9.1% year-on-year, amounting to USD 10,708.6 million. This decline was mainly due to a significant reduction in shipments of textiles and textile articles by 35.3%, and mineral products by 9.7%. China remained the primary destination for Mongolia's exports, accounting for 91.2% of the total, followed by Switzerland at 5.7% and the United States at 0.9%. On the import front, there was a slight decline of 0.9% totaling USD 8,533.8 million, influenced by reduced purchases of transport vehicles and their parts by 11.3%, along with a 3.3% drop in mineral products imports. China led as the largest source of imports at 40.6%, with Russia and Japan following at 23.9% and 10.8%, respectively.
