U.S. Pauses China Tech Restrictions Before Trump-Xi Meeting

The Trump administration has put several major tech-security measures targeting China on hold ahead of an April meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Reuters reported. The deferred actions include a proposed ban on China Telecom’s U.S. operations and new limits on the use of Chinese-made equipment in American data centers.

Washington has also paused proposed bans on U.S. sales of routers made by TP-Link, along with potential restrictions on the U.S. internet businesses of China Unicom and China Mobile. Another suspended measure would have prohibited the sale of Chinese-made electric trucks and buses in the United States.

These moves represent the latest attempt by the administration to avoid provoking Beijing following the trade truce reached in October between the two leaders. As part of that agreement, China pledged to delay imposing strict export controls on rare-earth minerals that are essential to global technology manufacturing.
