European Stocks Cautious

European stocks edged lower on Friday, with both the STOXX 50 and STOXX 600 slipping 0.1%, as markets paused after gains in the previous two sessions. Traders ended a week packed with monetary policy decisions on a cautious note.

As expected, the Bank of Japan raised interest rates to a 31-year high. However, two policymakers dissented and voted to keep rates unchanged, prompting concerns about the central bank’s ability to sustain its tightening cycle. At the same time, oil prices continued to decline.

Sector performance was mixed: telecom, energy, insurance and auto stocks were in negative territory, while technology names outperformed. Among large caps, Shell fell 1.2%, Nestlé dropped 1%, and Allianz lost 1.3%. Orange slid nearly 4%, making it the weakest performer on the STOXX 600.

By contrast, ASML Holding gained 2.1% and STMicroelectronics rose 2.2%, ranking among the index’s top performers. For the week, the STOXX 50 was broadly flat, while the STOXX 600 advanced 0.5%.
