Japan’s housing market showed signs of moderating momentum in late summer, as the growth in housing starts eased in August 2026. According to the latest data updated on 30 September 2026, housing starts rose 6.1% year-on-year in August, down from an 8.2% year-on-year increase recorded in July 2026.
Both figures are based on year-over-year comparisons, measuring how each month’s housing starts changed relative to the same month a year earlier. While July’s data pointed to a stronger expansion, August’s softer 6.1% rise suggests that the pace of construction activity is slowing, even as it remains in positive territory compared with a year ago.
The deceleration in August may indicate that some of the earlier strength in Japan’s residential construction sector is beginning to fade, though the continued year-on-year increase still reflects an environment of ongoing, if more measured, housing demand and building activity.
