XAU/USD, GOLD

Gold slipped to around $4,144 in early Asian trading on Wednesday, and the pressure isn't letting up. Rising crude prices are doing exactly what you'd expect, intensifying inflation worries and pushing major central banks toward a harder line, which in turn erodes the appeal of a metal that pays nothing to hold. Traders are holding their breath ahead of Wednesday's US Consumer Price Index release, which could swing the monetary policy narrative in either direction. The warnings came thick and fast on Tuesday. The International Monetary Fund flagged the dangers posed by towering public debt and climbing bond yields, noting that war-driven inflation could shove yields even higher. The Middle East isn't helping. Yemen's Houthi forces fired a barrage of missiles at Saudi cities; the military said it intercepted them, but falling debris injured at least four people in Riyadh and struck Dhahran. Every headline like that keeps the oil-inflation loop spinning. Yet there was one counterweight. New York Fed President John Williams said Tuesday that another hike this year still makes sense, but he expects no further tightening in 2027. Yields retreated after his remarks, with the two-year note giving back as much as 3 basis points. Lower yields typically lend gold a hand, since bullion doesn't generate income. Market pricing reflects the split: roughly 77.3% odds the Fed holds steady this month, against an 87.8% probability of a December increase. Even so, CTA short covering hasn't been enough to clear the downside risk hanging over gold and silver, and until that changes, rallies look vulnerable.

Gold is trading near $4,165, and the moving averages paint a picture of a market caught in a tug-of-war between timeframes. On the hourly chart, the 50-period average sits at $4,156 while the 200-period average rests way up at $4,290. Price is roughly $9 above the shorter average but about $125 beneath the longer one, a split reading that tells you the near-term bias has steadied even as the broader hourly trend stays tilted against buyers. Holding above $4,156 matters; lose it, and the floor drops away quickly. On the four-hour chart, the 50-period average reads $4,175 while the 200-period average sits at $4,157. That puts price about $10 below the shorter average but roughly $8 above the longer one, the exact inverse of the hourly setup. The detail worth circling is the overlap between the hourly 50-period average at $4,156 and the four-hour 200-period average at $4,157. When averages from different timeframes converge like that, they fuse into a single reinforced support shelf spanning $4,156 to $4,157, and that zone is currently the chart's most important floor. The first resistance barrier sits at $4,200, a round number that has repeatedly capped rebounds. Above it, $4,250 forms the next hurdle, followed by $4,290, which aligns with the hourly 200-period average. Further ceilings sit at $4,350 and $4,400 should buyers regain sustained traction. On the downside, initial support rests at $4,156, coinciding with the reinforced confluence beneath price. A break below would expose $4,100, a psychologically significant level likely to draw buyers, then $4,060, with $4,020 marking a deeper demand area. If gold holds above $4,156 and pushes through $4,200, buyers could target $4,250 and potentially $4,290 beyond it. Should selling pressure intensify and $4,156 give way, a deeper correction toward $4,100 and $4,060 becomes increasingly probable. The broader structure stays bearish while price remains beneath the hourly 200-period average, but the next move hinges on whether buyers can defend the $4,156–$4,157 shelf and how markets digest Wednesday's CPI release alongside Williams' tempered guidance and the oil-driven inflation backdrop.
