GBP/USD

The GBP/USD pair declined during Monday's trading session, trending lower in the absence of any fundamental or macroeconomic catalysts to drive the pound's sell-off. This is widely viewed as a normal technical pullback after previous strong gains. Market participants are assessing whether the decline is a routine correction within the current uptrend structure or a prelude to a stronger and more sustained dollar rally. From a technical perspective on the Ichimoku chart, as long as spot prices remain above the key Senku Span B level (currently at 1.3272), the structural validity of the overall medium-term uptrend remains intact. However, the ongoing macroeconomic fallout in the Eurozone remains a risk factor to watch; continued downward pressure on the euro would likely lead to a decline in the pound, underscoring the urgent need to decouple the pound from the euro given its greater relative resilience. While daily and weekly technical patterns continue to point towards a final target around the 1.3650 resistance level, the US dollar maintains safe-haven demand amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the general interpretation of the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting as positive for the dollar. Looking at the short-term price action on the 5-minute timeframe, Monday's trading session saw three clear technical sell signals, establishing a bearish tone. Prices initially closed below the horizontal support zone at 1.3369-1.3377 and then fell below the key baseline (Kijun-sen) before a subsequent retest of this key moving average failed. These technical pullbacks provide day traders with a high-probability sell entry signal and are expected to converge on short-term bearish targets for Tuesday around the 1.3301-1.3309 support zone. Meanwhile, data from the Traders' Sentiment (COT) report for GBP traders (specifically covering the reporting period as of October 20) shows that despite the overall structural uptrend, non-commercial speculators still maintain positions dominated by net negative positions. During the analyzed week, non-commercial participants added 10,000 long contracts and closed 16,500 short contracts, resulting in a significant expansion of net negative positions by 26,500 contracts. This position adjustment highlights potential institutional adjustments. Even as regional conflicts continue to simmer and Federal Reserve policy expectations shift, the demand for macro hedging against the US dollar remains high. Looking at the chart, the GBP/USD pair continues to exhibit a logical and orderly structural expansion, with both the daily and weekly charts showing that the recent price action has successfully unleashed liquidity from multi-month lows while remaining within a stable sideways channel. This structural health supports the broader technical outlook that the British pound may eventually move towards the upper limit of its daily range around 1.3650, similar to how the US dollar previously managed to rally without immediate new key support. For Tuesday's trading, key price action boundaries and Ichimoku chart reference levels are drawn in key areas including 1.3042-1.3050, 1.3096-1.3115, 1.3179-1.3187, 1.3248, and 1.3301 – support and resistance levels at 1.3309, 1.3369-1.3377, 1.3465-1.3480, 1.3588, and 1.3671-1.3681 – as well as dynamic Ichimoku chart references such as the main range B and the baseline at 1.3272. The risk management guide recommends setting a break-even point once the trading price shows a positive move of 20 basis points, but it's worth noting that the line level on the Ichimoku chart will continue to fluctuate throughout the trading day. With no major UK economic data releases today, market attention will shift to the upcoming US durable goods orders data. While the US domestic data may cause some temporary volatility, it is unlikely to overshadow the high-impact central bank announcements scheduled for later this week.
