Brunei Consumer Prices Drop the Most in 8 Months

Consumer prices in Brunei experienced a 0.6% decrease year-on-year in June 2025, following a 0.5% reduction in May. This marks the fourth consecutive month of deflation and the most significant decline since October 2024. The downward trend was primarily influenced by ongoing reductions in the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which decreased by 0.1% compared to the 0.7% decline in May. Additionally, there were notable decreases in the cost of clothing and footwear (-5.4% from -1.0%), housing and utilities (-0.1% from -0.2%), transport (-0.7% from -0.8%), communication (-0.3%), recreation and culture (-2.3% from -1.6%), and various goods and services (-0.1% from -0.2%).

Conversely, there was a slowdown in inflation for sectors such as health, which dropped to 1.0% from 1.6%, and for restaurants and hotels and education, both easing from 0.3% to 0.2%. On the other hand, prices for furnishings and household maintenance saw an increase of 0.1%, recovering from a 0.7% decline in the previous month. On a month-over-month basis, consumer prices slightly decreased by 0.03% in June, following a 0.1% decline in May, indicating the second consecutive monthly drop.
