In June 2025, the number of building consents issued for new dwellings in New Zealand decreased by 6.4% from the previous month, reaching a seasonally adjusted total of 2,627 units. This figure comprised 1,302 stand-alone houses, 1,169 townhouses, flats, and units, 116 apartments, and 40 retirement village units. Despite the decline on a monthly basis, the total number of new dwellings consented for the year ending in June 2025 increased by 1.0% to 33,979 compared to the previous year. The rate of new dwellings consented per 1,000 residents remained stable at 6.4. Concurrently, the annual value of non-residential building work consented experienced a slight decrease of 0.9%, amounting to $9.0 billion, reflecting some weakness in the commercial construction sector.
