Eurozone Construction Slump Eases as HCOB PMI Ticks Higher in February

The eurozone’s construction sector showed tentative signs of stabilisation in February, as the HCOB Eurozone Construction PMI edged up to 46.0 from 45.3 in January 2026. While the index remains below the 50.0 threshold that separates contraction from expansion, the month‑over‑month improvement points to a slower pace of decline across the bloc’s building activity.

The data, updated on 5 March 2026, indicate that February’s reading compares favourably with January’s level, suggesting that the sector’s downturn may be losing some intensity. On a month‑over‑month basis, the “actual” February figure reflects an easing in the contraction relative to the prior month, when the January PMI itself represented a weaker performance versus December.

Although construction output in the eurozone is still shrinking, the incremental rise in the PMI may offer some reassurance that conditions are not deteriorating as sharply as before. Market participants will now watch upcoming releases for signs of whether this modest improvement can be sustained or broaden into a more meaningful recovery.
