Egypt Inflation Rate at 4-Month Low of 14.3%

Egypt’s annual urban inflation slowed for the third straight month, easing to 14.3% in June 2026 from 14.6% in May and coming in below market expectations of 15.1%. This was the lowest reading since February, as the impact of earlier fuel price increases continued to diminish. Transport inflation cooled slightly to 24.4% in June from 24.7% in May.

In early March, Egypt raised fuel prices by roughly 14% to 17% across a broad range of petroleum products, its first fuel price hike of the year amid elevated global oil prices. Since then, the pass-through to consumer prices has started to fade.

The largest component of the CPI basket—food and beverages—also saw inflation ease, dropping to 5.4% in June from 7.6% in May, when it had posted its fastest increase in a year. Inflation moderated as well in clothing and footwear (to 13.6% from 14.2%) and in health (to 4.0% from 4.1%).

By contrast, housing and utility costs continued to accelerate, rising 41.2% in June compared with 40.4% in May, driven primarily by higher electricity prices.

On a monthly basis, the consumer price index fell 0.4%, reversing a 1.6% increase in May and marking the first month-on-month decline since July 2025.
