U.S. Industrial Production Dips In September Amid Boeing Strike, Hurricanes

A recent report from the Federal Reserve, released on Thursday, revealed that industrial production in the United States experienced a slightly larger-than-anticipated decline in September. According to the Fed, industrial production dropped by 0.3 percent during September, following a downward revision of a 0.3 percent increase in August.

Initially, economists had forecasted a 0.2 percent decrease in industrial production for September, contrasting with the originally reported 0.8 percent rise for the previous month. The larger-than-expected decrease was partially attributed to a strike at Boeing (BA) and the impact of Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

The report further detailed that manufacturing output decreased by 0.4 percent in September, following a 0.5 percent rise in August. Mining output also fell by 0.6 percent after a 0.7 percent increase the previous month, whereas utilities output rose by 0.7 percent, recovering from a 1.3 percent decline in August.

The Fed also indicated that capacity utilization in the industrial sector decreased to 77.5 percent in September from a downwardly revised 77.8 percent in August. Economists had anticipated a slight drop to 77.8 percent, down from an initially reported 78.0 percent the previous month.

In further detail, capacity utilization in the manufacturing and mining sectors dropped to 76.7 percent and 88.7 percent, respectively, while the utilities sector saw a modest increase in capacity utilization to 71.2 percent.
