New Zealand Visitor Arrivals Rise by 6.1% YoY in May

Visitor arrivals to New Zealand surged by 6.1% compared to the same time last year, reaching 190,593 in May 2025. The growth was particularly driven by increases from Australia, which saw an additional 4,200 visitors, China with 2,300 more visitors, and the United States adding 1,300 more visitors. The total number of arrivals now stands at 87% of the pre-COVID-19 levels recorded in May 2019, when 219,300 visitors came to the country. Australians accounted for the highest proportion of visitors at 45%, an increase from 42% in 2019. They were followed by travelers from the United States and China, each constituting 9% of total arrivals, although China's presence is still below its previous 13% share in 2019. Arrivals from India rose to make up 5% of the total, up from 3% in 2019, while both the United Kingdom and Singapore represented 3% of arrivals, with Singapore's share improving from a previous 2%. This steady revival in the tourism sector signals ongoing recovery in New Zealand's international travel market.
