In May 2025, Estonia experienced a widening of its trade deficit, which expanded to EUR 281 million from EUR 203 million in the same month the previous year. This increase was due to a larger rise in imports compared to exports. Specifically, exports increased by 2% year-on-year, reaching EUR 1,573 million, with shipments to EU countries rising by 3%, although there was a slight decrease to non-EU countries by 2%. Significant growth was observed in exports of agricultural products and food preparations (16%), transport equipment (15%), and electrical equipment (11%).
On the other hand, imports surged by 6% to a total of EUR 1,855 million, primarily driven by a notable 54% increase in purchases from non-EU countries, even as imports from EU countries fell by 1%. Import growth was particularly marked in sectors such as paper and related articles (11%), miscellaneous manufactured items (8%), and electrical equipment (7%). Overall, for the first five months of 2025, Estonia's trade deficit amounted to EUR 1,464 million, up from EUR 1,302 million during the same period in the previous year.
