New Zealand's Finance Minister, Nicola Willis, announced a historic appointment on Wednesday, introducing Anna Breman as the nation's new central bank governor. Breman is not only the first woman to assume this prestigious role, but she also brings a wealth of experience from her current position as the First Deputy Governor of the Riksbank, Sweden's central bank. Effective December 1st, she will begin her tenure at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ). "Dr. Breman arrives in New Zealand with a remarkable combination of technical expertise and organizational leadership," Willis stated. Highlighting the rigorous global search conducted by the RBNZ Board, which sifted through over 300 candidates, Willis commended the board's choice. The appointment was also well-received by RBNZ Board Deputy Chair, Rodger Finlay. This decision marks the first time in at least 37 years that a foreign national will lead the RBNZ, although precedence exists, such as the Bank of England's appointment of Canadian Mark Carney in 2012.
