In August 2025, building permits in the United States decreased by 2.3%, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.33 million, an upward revision from the preliminary count of 1.312 million. Despite this adjustment, it remains the lowest recorded level since May 2020. Permits for single-family homes fell by 1.9% to an annual rate of 858,000, while those for multi-unit buildings with five or more units saw a 2.8% decline to 420,000. On a regional basis, permits experienced a downturn in the Northeast, dropping 3.2% to 121,000; in the Midwest, decreasing 8.6% to 202,000; and in the South, falling 5.8% to 699,000. Conversely, the West saw an increase of 12.4% to 308,000.
