In August 2025, passenger car registrations in the European Union experienced a year-on-year increase of 5.3%, reaching a total of 677,786 units. This followed a 7.4% rise in July and represented the second month of successive growth. Key contributors to this growth were three of the EU's four largest markets: Spain, with a substantial increase of 17.2%; Germany, rising by 5.0%; and France, with a modest gain of 2.2%. Meanwhile, Italy saw a decline of 2.7% in registrations.
In the segment of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), registrations soared by 30.2%, propelled significantly by a remarkable 160.8% increase in Spain. Germany and France also recorded notable rises of 45.7% and 29.3%, respectively. Conversely, the Netherlands experienced a decrease in registrations by 3.8%.
For the year to date, overall car registrations across the EU saw a slight dip of 0.1%. However, BEV sales increased by 12.6%, reaching 1.13 million units, which now represent 15.8% of the EU market. Notably, three of the four largest BEV markets—Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands—contributed to 62% of total BEV registrations, with growth rates of 39.2%, 14.4%, and 5.1%, respectively. Contrasting this trend, France experienced a 2.0% decline in BEV registrations.
