Hong Kong’s economy strengthened notably at the start of 2026, with gross domestic product expanding by 2.9% quarter-over-quarter in the first quarter, up from a 1.0% increase in the fourth quarter of 2025. The latest data, updated on 5 May 2026, show a clear acceleration in growth momentum compared with the end of last year.
Measured on a quarter-over-quarter basis, the current figure reflects how much the economy grew in the first quarter of 2026 relative to the previous quarter, while the prior 1.0% reading captured growth in the fourth quarter of 2025 versus the third quarter. The jump from 1.0% to 2.9% indicates that Hong Kong’s pace of expansion has picked up sharply as the new year began.
