Sensex Extends Gains to Fifth Day

India’s BSE Sensex edged up about 0.3% to 78,857 on Tuesday, extending its winning streak to a fifth consecutive session, even as overall market sentiment stayed cautious after a technically driven surge in the previous session. Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) was among the biggest drags, with its shares slumping roughly 6.7% after the government announced plans to sell up to a 6.5% stake via an offer for sale.

The benchmark Nifty 50 traded lower, retracing part of Monday’s late-session gains, which had been propelled more by a new closing auction mechanism than by any broad-based strengthening in investor confidence. Market participants also remained alert to external risks, particularly geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their potential impact on crude oil prices and the Indian rupee, while awaiting fresh domestic and global cues.

Among the notable movers were Ather Energy (up 13.5%), Restaurant Brands Asia (10.9%), Deepak (6.3%), KEI (6.3%), and CG Power (5.6%).
