Italy Retail Sales Fall 0.1% in June

The value of retail sales in Italy slipped by 0.1% month-on-month in June 2026, reversing a 0.2% increase in May and undershooting market expectations for a 0.1% rise. This marked the first monthly decline since December 2025, largely driven by a drop in food sales (-0.4% vs +0.1% in May), while growth in non-food sales held steady at 0.2%.

On a yearly basis, retail sales increased by 3.1% in June, up from a 2.2% gain in May. The acceleration was supported by stronger growth in non-food sales (4.0% vs 2.2%) and a continued increase in food sales (1.9%).

Within the non-food segment, sales rose across all categories except footwear, leather goods, and travel goods, which fell by 1.2%. The strongest advances were recorded in household appliances, radios, televisions, and tape recorders (14.2%), and in IT, telecommunications, and telephone equipment (12.6%).

Retail sales increased across all distribution channels, with particularly strong growth in online commerce (26.7%).
