Switzerland Current Account Surplus Hits 1-Year High

Switzerland’s current account surplus widened to CHF 23.7 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up from a downwardly revised CHF 10.2 billion in the same quarter a year earlier. This was the largest surplus since the first quarter of 2025.

The expansion was mainly driven by a stronger goods account, where the surplus increased to CHF 29.7 billion from CHF 17.1 billion. The primary income account also improved, shifting to a surplus of CHF 0.3 billion from a deficit of CHF 1.7 billion, largely reflecting a rise in investment income to CHF 8.3 billion from CHF 6.5 billion. The labour income deficit, however, remained unchanged at CHF 8.2 billion.

In addition, the secondary income deficit narrowed to CHF 1.7 billion, compared with CHF 2.9 billion a year earlier. By contrast, the services account deficit widened to CHF 4.4 billion from CHF 2.2 billion.
