Indonesia Retail Sales Fall the Least in 3 Months

Indonesia’s retail sales fell 3.0% year-on-year in June 2026, moderating from a 3.9% contraction in May and marking the smallest decline since the downturn began in April. The softer drop reflects the early effects of government support measures designed to ease ongoing cost-of-living pressures on households and to stimulate spending.

Performance across sectors remained uneven. Sales of food, beverages, and tobacco decreased 3.6% (compared with -4.1% in May), while clothing sales were down 3.1%, a marked improvement from the 12.0% slump in the previous month. By contrast, sales of information and communication equipment plunged 20.2% (vs -18.4% in May). Recreational goods slipped 6.2% after a modest gain earlier, and fuel sales turned negative, falling 1.5%.

Some categories showed more resilience. Household equipment sales rebounded 2.8% (from -0.9% previously), and automotive parts posted strong growth, surging 18.8% (vs 11.2% in May).

On a month-on-month basis, overall retail sales edged up 0.7%, the first increase in three months. As fiscal support measures continue to take hold, retail activity is expected to firm further in July, offering early signs that consumer demand may be stabilising.
