The EU and Germany’s authorities are outraged by trade tariffs planned by US President Donald Trump. The global community is in turmoil, braced for grave consequences. According to Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the European Union will certainly respond to Trump's tariffs, as Washington "leaves the community no other choice."
In the current situation, there will be no winners or losers. While tensions are escalating, both sides are exchanging sarcastic remarks. “The European Union risks being targeted by US tariffs, just like the current situation with steel and aluminum. If Washington leaves us no other choice, the EU countries will retaliate decisively,” the head of the German government pointed out.
Olaf Scholz believes that trade wars and tariffs hurt both sides and do not contribute to economic prosperity. Moreover, he noted that the European Union would suffer losses due to the ongoing trade conflict between the US and China even without Trump’s stance on EU exports.
Earlier, the European Commission policymakers stated that they would have to “act decisively” if the White House imposed additional tariffs on goods from the EU. “The European Commission will respond as appropriate to protect the interests of businesses, employees, and consumers,” the communique reads.
So far, the European Commission has not received any official notifications about new tariffs on EU goods, but the situation could change at any moment.
