MasterCard is facing a lawsuit on behalf of 40 million UK consumers. It is the largest legal claim in the British history. Forty million plaintiffs is not the final figure as the case concerns MasterCard users residing in the UK from 1992 to 2008. The reason for the legal case was a rip-off relating to fees that retailers pay to process card payments. MasterCard is sued for 14 billion pounds, or $18.7 billion, which means millions of Britons could get more than 300 pounds each. This is one of the first cases made possible by the Consumer Rights Act 2015 that allows lawsuits on behalf of vast numbers of claimants.
Representatives of the world’s largest payment system have not revealed details of the investigation but stated that “MasterCard firmly disagrees with the basis of this legal claim.” MasterCard is one of the UK’s largest payment systems. The number of transactions per year exceeds 22 billion.
