Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel joined the team of the EU authorities. Frau Merkel took over the presidency of the European Council from Croatia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs on July 1. She will chair the Council for the next six months.
Angela Merkel has made a name for herself as an outstanding political leader on a global scale. Being at the helm of the strongest European economy, Germany secured its status of the EU powerhouse, the 4th world’s largest economy in terms of nominal GDP, and an influential political player. Frau Merkel accepts the rotating presidency of the EU in the time of the pandemic-driven crisis. With her vast expertise, the EU will show the green shoots of recovery in the near future. Frau Merkel already presided over the European Council in 2007 when the 2008 financial crisis was looming on the horizon. With her efforts, the EU leaders took precautionary measures to tackle painful issues such as the financial crash, the debt crisis in South Europe, the split of Ukraine, Brexit, a flood of refugees, and even Donald Trump’s presidency. So, the odds are that Angela Merkel will cope well with the pandemic aftermath.
German Chancellor and French President Emmanuel Macron have come up with the proposal of the recovery fund worth €750 billion. Besides, Frau Merkel forges ahead with the idea of Eurobonds with zero interest rates. Originally, her major opponent was Emmanuel Macron. Nevertheless, she managed to win him over to her side.
