Amazon receives FAA approval for drone delivery

Amazon, an American e-commerce retailer, starts a new chapter of its history. The company has recently received official approval for the commercial delivery of packages by drones from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). From now on, Amazon Prime Air is a cargo airline operating exclusively to transport Amazon packages.

Interestingly, this is not the first case of such authorization. Firms such as Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., and UPS logistics company, also have the right to launch drones. They have already been delivering small shipments and medicines in several states. However, Amazon is the one that has every chance to make this type of delivery popular as well as to expand not only the list of goods allowed for such transportation but also the boundaries of the coverage area. The retailer has already unveiled its MK27 hexagon-shaped drone, which is capable of carrying packages weighing up to 2.2 kg within a 12 km radius from a warehouse. The flying vehicle has several smart sensors that prevent MK27 from the collision with power lines. In addition, MK27 does not pose a risk to people or pets.

News about Amazon winning an approval triggered a spike in the company’s stock which jumped by 1.4%. Earlier, US President Donald Trump had blamed the company for the decline of the American Postal Service. According to Trump, the post office lost $3 and $4 a package on average because of companies like Amazon.
