President-elect Joe Biden is likely to face serious problems when he starts implementing some of the initiatives from his election campaign. Among them will be Biden’s promise to end US fossil fuel subsidies. This particular one will be hard to keep due to resistance from the Congress. Thus, lawmakers and some of Biden’s fellow Democrats intend to oppose his decision to axe fossil fuel subsidies. "It [the legislation] is dead on arrival in the Senate," Gilbert Metcalf, a former deputy assistant secretary for environment and energy at the Treasury Department, said. In fact, it refers to every standalone legislation ditching the tax breaks if Republicans are able to retain control of the chamber. However, even if Republicans fail to win the majority in the Senate, Biden has a slim chance of killing the subsidies as moderate Democrats from fossil fuel producing states could stymie the effort. Therefore, even with a 50-50 split in the Senate, the new president is unlikely to launch the initiative. President Barack Obama also wanted to ditch tax breaks for fossil fuels but failed. Experts suggest that any legislation on changing tax regulations for the fossil fuel sector will face strong resistance from lobbyists.
