The Russian authorities once again failed to launch the Nord Stream-2 project on time. To somehow justify the delay, they decided to stick to a well-known approach: attack is the best form of defense. Thus, according to Moscow, Nord Stream 2 has not been completed due to the political pressure on Germany from the US.
Konstantin Blokhin, a leading researcher at The Center of Security Problems of Russian Academy of Science, believes that the US constantly intervenes in the building of the Nord Stream 2 project in order to solve foreign policy problems. For example, Süddeutsche Zeitung reports that the United States and Germany do not have a mutual agreement on Nord Stream-2. It means that Germany has to reckon with Washington even though in public, the country condemns the attempts of the US to interfere in its domestic affairs.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas failed to reach a consensus on this matter on the sidelines of the G7 meeting in London. The officials had a forty-minute conversation on the bilateral relations between Berlin and Washington. Notably, both parties underlined that the conversation was conducted on an equal footing.
Nord Stream-2 remains one of the stumbling blocks in relations between Germany and the United States. Joe Biden has taken the same stance on the project. Washington is still trying to stop the construction of the gas pipeline by imposing new sanctions.
