Apple is reportedly planning to equip its artificial intelligence data centers with M2 Ultra chips before transitioning to the more advanced M4 chips, Bloomberg states. According to Mark Gurman, an analyst at Bloomberg, the tech giant intends to utilize the M2 chips for more complex AI tasks such as generating AI images and summarizing extensive texts. On the other hand, more straightforward tasks, such as summarizing notifications, would be processed directly on the device.
The report also indicates that the decision to employ in-house chips for AI servers was established three years ago. Previously, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple was in the process of developing custom chips to enhance privacy and security for a project known as Apple Chips in Data Center. However, this concept was later abandoned as the company concluded that the existing in-house chips already supply sufficient privacy and security.
Lastly, Apple recently debuted a new iPad Air equipped with an M2 chip and an iPad Pro that features an M4 chip. The latter has been publicized as being an "outrageously powerful chip for AI" due to its capabilities, including a 16-core neural engine.
