FX.co ★ Austria Trade Balance Swings to Deficit in April

In April 2025, Austria experienced a trade deficit of EUR 0.45 billion, a shift from the EUR 0.13 billion surplus recorded in the same month the previous year. This change was driven by an increase in imports coupled with a decline in exports. Specifically, imports rose by 1.9% year-on-year, reaching EUR 16.45 billion. The rise was chiefly due to a significant 15.1% increase in chemical products, which helped offset a notable 16.5% decline in the import of fuels and energy. Import activity showed an upward trend with non-EU countries, experiencing an 8.0% growth, while it decreased by 1.0% with EU countries. Concurrently, exports contracted by 1.4%, totaling EUR 16.00 billion. This reduction was largely attributed to decreased shipments in chemical products, which fell by 12.1%, and in processed goods, which declined by 3.1%. Exports witnessed a decrease to both non-EU countries at 1.6% and EU countries at 1.4%.
