U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that effective October 1, 2025, a 100% tariff will be applied to branded or patented pharmaceutical products unless the respective company is actively constructing a manufacturing facility within the United States. In a post on Truth Social, Trump elaborated that the term "IS BUILDING" will be interpreted to mean "breaking ground" or being "under construction," thus exempting products from plants that are currently being built. He stated, "Consequently, there will be no tariff on these pharmaceutical products if construction has commenced. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" In July, the administration had signaled intentions to impose tariffs as high as 200% on pharmaceuticals but clarified that companies would be afforded time to realign their supply chains domestically before these tariffs are enforced.
