In August 2025, retail sales in Malaysia increased by 5% compared to the same month the previous year. This represents a slight decrease from the 5.6% growth seen in July, which was at a four-month high. August's growth rate is the slowest since May, as sales decelerated across most major sectors. Specifically, there was a reduction in growth for food, beverages, and tobacco (with an increase of 5.5% compared to July's 6.1%), automotive fuel (5.3% compared to 6.6%), information and communication equipment (3.1% down from 3.3%), household equipment (2.6% compared to 3.6%), other goods (6% down from 7.6%), sales conducted via stalls and markets (5.2% compared to 5.5%), and trade not performed in stores, stalls, or markets (5% down from 5.1%). In contrast, sales for cultural and recreational goods in specialized stores saw a slight increase (3.1% up from 3%), as did sales in non-specialized stores (5.6% compared to 5.5%). On a month-over-month basis, retail sales rose by 0.5% in August, recovering from a 0.8% decline in July.
