Canada Wholesale Sales Fall for First Time in Four Months

In August 2025, Canada's wholesale trade experienced a downturn of 1.2% compared to the previous month, reaching C$85.4 billion. This marked the first decline after three consecutive months of growth, offsetting the 1.2% increase witnessed in July, though it surpassed the anticipated 1.3% decline. Of the seven subsectors, three reported decreases, representing nearly half of the total wholesale trade. The most significant downturns were observed in the motor vehicles and parts sector, which plummeted by 8.8%—driven predominantly by a 10.7% drop in the motor vehicle industry—and the food, beverage, and tobacco sector, which fell by 3.8% due to a 4.2% reduction in food sales. However, this overall decline was somewhat mitigated by gains in the miscellaneous subsector, which rose by 4.0%, and in the machinery, equipment, and supplies subsector, which increased by 2.3%. Regionally, wholesale sales decreased in seven provinces, notably led by Ontario, which fell by 2.4% to C$43.8 billion, and Quebec, which dipped by 1.0% to C$15.3 billion. In contrast, Saskatchewan diverged from this trend, experiencing a notable increase of 9.6% to reach C$3.9 billion.
