In a significant development, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping concluded discussions in South Korea on Thursday, with President Trump describing the talks as an “amazing meeting.” The leaders reached a consensus on several crucial topics, including trade, tariffs, and rare-earth minerals. The 90-minute dialogue, held at Busan’s Gimhae International Airport, seemed to pave the way for more extensive negotiations. President Trump announced plans to visit China in April, hinting that a tentative trade agreement might be forthcoming.
During the summit, Trump spoke of a 10% reduction in tariffs on China, contingent upon Beijing’s assistance in addressing the fentanyl crisis. Additionally, China is set to resume substantial imports of soybeans from the U.S. The leaders also reportedly agreed to remove Chinese restrictions concerning rare-earth minerals, with Trump stating, “All of the rare earth [issue] is settled… There’s no roadblock from China anymore.” Beyond trade matters, the two discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine and expressed a commitment to collaborate. As of now, Chinese officials have not released a statement regarding the meeting.
