France Household Spending Rises Unexpectedly

In September 2025, household consumption in France saw an unexpected rise of 0.3% compared to the previous month, surpassing market expectations that anticipated no change, and marking an acceleration from the revised 0.2% growth in August. This modest recovery was largely fueled by increases in energy and food expenditures. Energy spending saw a 0.5% uptick, bouncing back from a 0.1% decline in August, driven by a notable surge in gas usage and significant recovery in super unleaded petrol consumption. Similarly, food product expenditures increased by 0.2%, up from a 0.1% decrease, primarily due to heightened spending on bakery, pastry, and various other food items. However, spending on manufactured goods showed slower growth at 0.3%, down from 0.5%, with an increase in durable goods expenditure but a notable slowdown in spending on textiles and clothing. On a year-over-year basis, household consumption declined by 0.3% in September 2025.
