In September 2025, retail sales in Greece experienced a 1.7% year-on-year decline, marking the first dip in four months and contrasting with the 3.8% increase observed in August. This downturn was primarily attributed to a decrease in food sales, which fell by 3.6%, down from a 5.0% increase in August. Additionally, the automotive fuel sector saw a more pronounced decline of 7.2% compared to a 2.4% decrease the previous month. Growth in non-food items also decelerated, registering at 2.7% as opposed to 6.9% in August. On a seasonally adjusted month-to-month basis, retail activity dropped by 2.0%, reversing a slight 0.1% increase reported in August.
