FX.co ★ US Industrial Production Edges Higher in September

In September 2025, U.S. industrial production experienced a modest increase of 0.1% compared to the previous month. This came after a revised decline of 0.3% in August and slightly surpassed market forecasts, which had anticipated no change. The primary driver of this growth was a recovery in the utilities sector, which saw an uptick of 1.1% following a significant 3.0% decrease in the previous month. Notably, electric utility output increased by 1.3%, more than compensating for a 0.4% fall in natural gas utilities. Meanwhile, mining output remained steady, maintaining the 0.4% gain observed in August. Likewise, manufacturing production showed no change, compared to the slight 0.1% rise recorded earlier. Within the manufacturing sector, durable goods output grew marginally by 0.1%, buoyed by expansions in aerospace and miscellaneous transportation equipment (up by 1.4%), fabricated metal products (up by 1.2%), and computer and electronic products (up by 0.7%). These gains were partially offset by reductions in motor vehicles and parts (down by 2.2%) and machinery (down by 0.1%). On the other hand, nondurable goods production decreased by 0.1%, marked by a 0.2% decline in chemical output, while the production of food, beverages, and tobacco products remained stable.
