This rise was propelled by strong performances in the consumer and technology sectors, which offset losses in other areas. Investor sentiment was bolstered by China's remarkable trade surplus in 2025, with December figures surpassing USD 100 billion. This was fueled by robust export activities directed towards non-U.S. markets, a strategic shift in response to tariff risks initiated during the Trump administration. However, the gains were moderated due to a decline in mainland equities after Chinese exchanges unexpectedly raised margin requirements to address market overheating. Concurrently, U.S. equity futures experienced significant declines following losses on Wall Street the previous day. This was due to apprehensions regarding central bank independence, tepid U.S. inflation statistics, and escalating geopolitical tensions after Beijing issued a warning of potential retaliation should Washington impose a 25% tariff on nations engaging in trade with Tehran. Noteworthy gainers included Alibaba Health International (17.4%), Nongfu Spring (5.7%), Kuaishou Technology (3.9%), Laopu Gold (3.2%), and Galaxy Entertainment (2.6%).
