In the week ending January 9, 2026, U.S. crude oil inventories increased by 3.4 million barrels, reaching a total of 422.4 million barrels. This growth marks the largest rise in two months and contrasts with market expectations, which anticipated a reduction of 2.2 million barrels. Additionally, the crude oil reserves at the Cushing, Oklahoma delivery hub experienced an increase of 745 thousand barrels. Gasoline inventories also saw a significant rise, increasing by 9 million barrels to a total of 251 million barrels, surpassing projections that predicted a 3.6 million-barrel increase. Meanwhile, distillate stockpiles, which include diesel and heating oil, remained nearly unchanged from the previous week at 129.2 million barrels, against expectations of a 0.5 million-barrel increase.
