Bulgaria recorded a trade deficit of BGN 2,909.1 million in December 2025, up from BGN 1,653.6 million in the same month a year earlier. This was a new record high, as import growth outpaced that of exports. On an annual basis, imports rose by 17.3% to BGN 9,645.5 million, supported by stronger purchases from both non-EU countries (up 30.7%) and EU member states (up 7.9%). In comparison, exports grew more modestly, increasing by 2.5% to BGN 6,736.4 million. Shipments to the EU expanded by 6.5%, while sales to non-EU markets fell by 3.7%. For the full year 2025, Bulgaria’s trade deficit widened sharply to BGN 21,710.6 million, from BGN 12,864.5 million in the previous year.
