Foreign investors purchased C$46.7 billion in Canadian securities in January 2026, reversing a C$5.8 billion divestment recorded in December. This rebound was driven primarily by a record C$51.3 billion in foreign investment in Canadian bonds, partially offset by a C$10.2 billion reduction in holdings of money market instruments.
Bond purchases were led by an unprecedented C$31.5 billion in corporate bond investment, fueled largely by new euro-denominated issues from chartered banks. Federal government bonds attracted C$12.9 billion in foreign inflows, following a record C$33.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025. Provincial bonds also drew strong demand, with foreign purchases totaling C$6.8 billion, the highest level since May 2025.
Foreign investors increased their Canadian equity holdings by C$5.7 billion, even as non-resident investors continued to scale back their exposure to money market instruments, divesting C$10.2 billion in that segment.
