UK shop price inflation continued to moderate in April 2026, with the BRC Shop Price Index easing to 1.0% year-over-year, down from 1.2% in March 2026. The latest data, updated on 27 April 2026, points to a further slowdown in annual price growth across UK retailers.
The index measures the annual change in shop prices by comparing each month’s level with the same month a year earlier. April’s 1.0% reading means prices in UK shops were, on average, 1.0% higher than in April a year ago, a smaller increase than the 1.2% annual rise recorded in March.
The gradual easing in shop price inflation suggests that some cost pressures in the retail sector may be stabilising, offering tentative relief for consumers who have faced sustained price increases in recent years. However, prices are still rising year-over-year, indicating that overall conditions at the checkout remain tighter than before the recent inflationary cycle.
