Housing starts in Canada surged 17% in April 2026 to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 279,300 units, up from the previous month and far exceeding market expectations of 240,000 units. This was the highest level in four months, indicating renewed strength in residential construction activity. Rural starts were estimated at 13,694 units.
