Retail sales in Portugal increased by 4.3% year-on-year in April 2026, slowing from a revised 5.7% rise in March. Within this, growth in retail trade eased to 4.9% from 6.0%, while wholesale trade growth decelerated to 1.5% from 4.4%. In contrast, the trade, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles segment strengthened, with growth accelerating to 12.2% from 9.2% in March. On a monthly basis, retail sales fell by 1.5%, partially offsetting the 2.4% gain recorded in March. At the same time, employment grew by 0.7% year-on-year in April, wages increased by 6.1%, and hours worked rose by 1.9%.
