Spain’s new car registrations declined by 0.8% year-on-year in May 2026, to 111,894 units, mainly due to a 10% contraction in the rental channel following Easter fleet stockpiling and early preparations for the summer season. In contrast, private and corporate registrations increased by 4.5% and 0.9%, respectively. Electric vehicles (BEVs and PHEVs) maintained robust momentum, with sales surging 18% to 25,790 units and capturing 23.1% of the market. From January to May, total vehicle registrations reached 519,531 units, up 5.9% compared with the same period in 2025, while EV registrations jumped 43.6% to 111,380 units, accounting for 21.4% of the market—6 percentage points above the 2025 target.
