The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks shipping rates for vessels carrying dry bulk commodities, declined for a second consecutive session on Monday, slipping 0.1% to 3,222 points, weighed down by weakness in larger vessel classes. The capesize index, covering ships that typically transport 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, also eased 0.1% to 5,496 points. In contrast, the panamax index—reflecting rates for vessels that usually carry about 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain—rose by 1 point to 2,344 points, while the supramax index inched up 1 point to 1,570 points.
