The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for vessels transporting dry bulk commodities, fell for a third consecutive session on Wednesday, slipping about 0.6% to 2,653 points—its lowest level since April 21. The decline was driven by weaker rates in the larger vessel segments.
The capesize index, covering ships that typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, dropped about 0.9% to 3,877 points, its lowest reading in more than two months. The panamax index, which reflects rates for vessels that usually transport 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, fell 43 points to 2,223 points.
In contrast, the supramax index edged higher, rising 1.2% to 1,705 points.
