Japan Construction Orders Slump Eases Sharply in May, Year-on-Year Decline Narrows to 6.7%

Japan’s construction sector showed signs of stabilization in May 2026, as the pace of decline in construction orders slowed markedly on a year-over-year basis. According to data updated on 30 June 2026, construction orders fell 6.7% in May compared with the same month a year earlier, a substantial improvement from April’s steep 32.3% year-on-year drop.

The data suggest that while activity in Japan’s construction industry remains below last year’s levels, the sharp contraction seen in April may have begun to ease. The May figure indicates that the sector is still under pressure, but the narrowing decline could point to a tentative bottoming out in demand or a gradual normalization after an unusually weak prior month.

Market participants and policymakers will be watching upcoming months closely to see whether May’s milder fall in orders develops into a sustained trend, or merely represents a temporary rebound from April’s severe year-on-year contraction.
