Hungary’s trade balance recorded a surplus of EUR 502 million in May 2026, up from EUR 342 million in the same month a year earlier, as export growth outpaced that of imports. Exports rose 7.4% year-on-year to EUR 13,228 million, primarily driven by higher shipments of raw materials and machinery and transport equipment, partly offset by a decline in energy carrier exports. Imports increased at a slower pace of 6.3% to EUR 12,727 million, supported by stronger purchases of energy carriers and machinery and transport equipment, while imports of food, beverages, and tobacco weakened. Over the first five months of 2026, however, the trade surplus narrowed to EUR 3.44 billion from EUR 4.96 billion a year earlier, as exports grew by 5.3% and imports rose at a faster rate of 8.4%.
