Austria Slips Back Into HICP Deflation in June as Prices Fall Month-on-Month

Austria’s Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) turned negative in June 2026, underscoring renewed disinflationary pressure in the euro area economy. Month-on-month, the HICP fell by 0.3%, reversing the modest 0.1% increase recorded in May 2026, according to data updated on 1 July 2026.

The month-on-month comparison shows that price dynamics weakened notably: while May’s reading signalled a slight uptick in prices compared with April, June registered an outright decline versus May. The move from a 0.1% rise to a 0.3% drop suggests that short‑term price momentum in Austria has cooled further at the start of the summer period.

Investors and policymakers will be watching subsequent releases to determine whether June’s negative HICP print is a temporary fluctuation or the start of a more persistent pattern of subdued price growth. For now, the data highlight that Austrian consumer prices, measured on a harmonised basis with the rest of the euro area, have softened on a month‑to‑month basis.
