US energy companies injected 61 billion cubic feet (bcf) of natural gas into storage during the week ended July 3, surpassing market expectations for a 49 bcf build, EIA data showed. The injection also exceeded both the 53 bcf added in the same week a year earlier and the five-year average increase of 51 bcf. Total working gas in storage rose to 2.983 trillion cubic feet, leaving inventories about 0.5% below year-earlier levels but 6.6% above the five-year seasonal average. The latest build followed an 87 bcf injection in the prior week ended June 26.
